Pasadena is known for a variety of architectural styles including modern and character homes.
Pasadena is known for many historic neighborhoods. One of the more well known is Bungalow Heaven. You will also be able to find many examples of California Bungalows in Historic Highlands and Garfield Heights.
Most people don't realize this, but many of the original bungalows were built out of a box using a Sears kit.
Many of these wonderful homes cost around $1,000 and were delivered to Californians eager to build the low-slung, often single-story homes with the deep verandas and overhanging eaves that protect them form California's powerful sunshine.
Bungalows are very convenient for the homeowner in that all living areas are on a single story and there are no stairs. A bungalow is well suited to persons with impaired mobility, such as the elderly or those in wheelchairs.
With bungalows, strategically planted trees and shrubs are usually sufficient to block the view of neighbors.
Bungalows are 1 or 1½ story houses, with sloping roofs and eaves with unenclosed rafters, and typically feature a gable (or an attic vent designed to look like one) over the main portion of the house. Ideally, bungalows are horizontal in massing, and are integrated with the earth by use of local materials and transitional plantings. This helps create the signature look most people associate with the California Bungalow.
