Located ten miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, the city of Pasadena is bounded by the San Gabriel Mountains and the San Rafael Hills. The Arroya Seco, a 24.9-mile seasonal river and one of Southern California's most picturesque canyons, affords plentiful natural scenic beauty to the area. Residents of Pasadena, the 180th largest city in America, enjoy an enviable quality of life in an architecturally rich and uniquely vibrant setting.
Pasadena boasts a rich history with Native American, Spanish and Mexican influences playing a significant role in its heritage. Prompted by a harsh Indiana winter, part of the Rancho San Pasqual was purchased by a group of friends from Indianapolis. That land was incorporated as the city of Pasadena in 1886, primarily in support of prohibition.
The 2010 United States Census reported that the population of Pasadena consisted of 137,122 people. The area is culturally diverse with a racial makeup consisting of 55.8% White, 10.7% African American and 14.3% Asian. Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 33.7% of the population. It is estimated that only a little over 55% of the population over the age of five speak English at home. Of 55,270 households, just over a quarter have children under the age of 18. The average age of residents is 37 years and for every 100 women, there are around 94 males.
Pasadena is divided into four primary zones and each zone has multiple neighborhoods.
