South El Monte was home to the Shoshone Indians, who used the area as their campsite and watering hole. The Thompson family settled in the area, during the California Gold rush and founded the The El Monte Township in the late 1860s. The city of South El Monte was incorporated in 1958 with a population of less than 4000.

The official seal of the City of South El Monte contains the words "City of Achievement”, which reflects the hard work the people put in to fight against the expectations of regional planners and they worked tirelessly to bring the benefits of postwar metropolitan growth to their working-class community. The people of this diverse city came together to improve schools, medical care, employment prospects, and recreational opportunities for their neighbors, despite the challenges of racism, inequality, and poverty.

Today South El Monte is a dynamic community with a population of 20,987, per the 2017 US Census. Median household income 2013-2017 was $44,651. The city has a total area of 2.8 square miles. The land use is 54% industrial, 26 % residential, 6 % retail, 3 % office/commercial, and 6 % other amenities.
