The establishment of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad in 1887 and developing of the area, led to a business boom and formation of San Dimas. The city name comes from San Dismas Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains.
San Dimas was an agricultural community, growing wheat and other Midwestern crops at first and later on, orange and lemon groves. At one point in time, four citrus packing houses and a marmalade factory were located in San Dimas. The “Sunkissed” brand or “Sunkist”, as its spelled today, comes from San Dimas.
Incorporated as a city in 1960, San Dimas is a quaint town with a population of 34,326, per the 2017 US Census, and spans 15 square miles. It’s located 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and borders Covina to the west, Glendora and San Gabriel mountains to the north, northwest, La Verne to the east and Pomona to the south.
Most of San Dimas students attend Covina-Valley Unified School District and a small number of students belong to the Charter Oak Unified School District.
