Located in the Pomona Valley, the area was originally inhabited by the the Tongva Native Americans. In 1830s, when California was a part of Mexico, Ricardo Vejar and Ygnacio Palomares settled in Pomona, followed by Anglo-Americans in the 1840s. In 1848 California became a part of United States.
Pomona became a leader in citrus farming and known as the “Urban Garden” in the 1800’s. The city was named after the Roman goddess of fruit and fruit trees in 1887. Vineyards were also flourishing and Pomona supplied the winemaking and raisin industries. The vineyards were replaced by citrus orchards and olive groves in the 1890's. With one of the highest per-capita levels of income in the United States, Pomona was known as the "Queen of the Citrus Belt" in the 1920s.
Pomona was incorporated as a City on January 6, 1888, and became a charter City in 1911. It’s located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and is the seventh largest city in Los Angeles County, with a population of over 151,000.
