Approximately 12 miles southeast from downtown Los Angeles at the very south edge of San Gabriel Valley, lies the city of Pico Rivera. Incorporated in January 1958, the city was formed through the merging of two historic communities, Pico and Rivera. It became the 61st city in Los Angeles County.
Pico Rivera was originally an agricultural area. After World War II, there was an increasing demand for homes, and the community evolved into a residential, and later on, an industrial area.
Today Pico Rivera has a population of 63,522, per the 2017 US Census Bureau. Within the city’s nine square miles, more than 120 acres are devoted to recreational uses, including just under 100 acres of local parks. Elementary and high school students in the community are served by the El Rancho Unified School District, which is also the top employer in the city, and Montebello Unified School District, with a number of universities and colleges in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
