West Covina was formed to prevent the City of Covina from establishing sewage farm within the city boundaries. The 507 residents in the area, came together to maintain local control of their land and the city was incorporated in 1923. Crops such as walnut and orange groves continued to grow during the following decades.
Located approximately 19 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, in the eastern San Gabriel Valley, the population was 106,098 at the 2010 US census. Between 2009–2013, West Covina had a median household income of $67,088. The largest employer is Citrus Valley Medical Center.
West Covina is mostly served by the West Covina Unified School District. Some portions of West Covina are also served by the Covina Valley Unified School District and Rowland Unified School District.
