Baldwin Park is a city located in the central San Gabriel Valley area, less than 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The city has a population of 76,402 per the 2017 US Census estimation. The total land area is just shy of 7 square miles. Baldwin Park is home to the first In-N-Out burger stand, which opened in 1948 and was the first drive-thru in California.
Baldwin Park began as part of cattle grazing land belonging to the San Gabriel Mission. Eventually the land became part of the Rancho Azusa de Dalton and the Rancho La Puente properties. The area was known as Vineland in 1860. The city name was changed 1906, to Baldwin Park, after Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin. Baldwin Park became the 47th incorporated city in the State of California.
The first school was built in 1882, and was located on the southeast corner of North Maine. According to county records, The Vineland School District was established in 1888. Today, there are 23 schools within the Baldwin Park Unified School District.
Vias Turkey Ranch, a huge commercial ranch, was located in the city in the 1950s. However, when the land value escalated, the property was sold and the ranch moved to Appel Valley.
